PARROTS

Parrots & birds at Julie's Pets, Newton Aycliffe

Because of their interest in parrots and birds, Gary and Julie stock a wide range of parrot and bird cages, bird/parrot seed, cuttlefish bones, and food supplements to ensure your parrot or other bird gets the correct intake of minerals and vitamins.

Cages

A Pet Parrot needs a lot of love and attention as well as regular exercise, and a cage that allows it to spread its wings, buy the largest Cage you can afford. A lot of the larger Birds will outlive you if looked after correctly just think how you would feel being shut in a small cage for life!!

A selection of cages offered for sale at Julie's Pets shop at Newton Aycliffe, are shown below and can be delivered free of charge to their market stalls at Catterick or Billingham or delivered free of charge within a reasonable distance of their pet shop or the markets (telephone Gary or Julie to confirm whether delivery is free to your area or to obtain details of delivery cost).

Advice on choosing and caring for parrots

Depending on the species, parrots can live from 20 years to as old as 70 years and can grow to an average size of 33cm (13 ½") in length, or in the case of larger species to 52.5cm ( 21") in length. It is therefore very important that you make sure that you buy the right cage for your parrot, between 18 cubic feet and 24 cubic feet for larger parrots.

Parrots are very vocal and can wolf whistle as loud as a siren. Once they have learned a word they can repeat it for hours. If you think the noise will bother you, or your neighbours, do not buy a parrot.

They can also be very messy. They often fling food they do not like and after eating sticky fruits they wipe their beaks on whatever is handy, the cage, the perch, furniture, or even you. Also, consider that you will have to clean up their droppings regularly.

If you really want a parrot, do some research before buying and consider issues such as the birds age, health and personality before you make your final choice. The following links will help you in that research:

OTHER BIRDS.

Come along to Julie's Pet Shop to see a selection of pet birds that include:

Love Birds

Lovebirds are among the most interesting pet bird and are often chosen as a first pet bird.

There are 3 species which are named 'lovebirds', because of the way they sit close to each other, not because they are in love with each other. However, some lovebirds can and do mate for life.

It is important to note that lovebirds are social birds and should be kept in pairs.

Come and see the fascinating lovebirds at Julie's Pets, Newton Aycliffe.

Canaries

Their small size, lesser need for social interaction make for an ideal pet. Since only male canaries sing, there is no way to sex a canary by just looking at it.

Canaries are famous for their colour and song. The variety of notes, the arrangement and the sheer cheerfulness shown by a singing male canary, make them good companions.

Why not come and see the collection of canaries at Julie’s Pets.

Budgies

Budgies are the most popular cage bird. They are affectionate and some can be trained to talk.

Budgies enjoy flying about the house rather than being in the cage all the time but you must let them get used to their cage first, before you let them out and ensure that doors and windows are shut.
