THINKING OF BUYING A PET?

Pets can be excellent companions to adults and children alike. They can teach children the responsibilities of looking after and loving a living animal, and teach them the many skills required to properly care for pets.

Pets can also be noisy, expensive and take a lot of time and effort to exercise and care for. Special consideration should be given to many questions before taking on what is a long term commitment - sometimes a lifetime or intergenerational commitment (Some parrots live to 70 years and some tortoise live to 150 years).

GARY AND JULIE STONGLY ADVISE THAT YOU CONSIDER THE SERIES OF QUESTIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE (CLICK HERE), BEFORE BUYING ANY PET.

STILL INTERESTED IN OWNING A PET?

If the answer is yes, you should visit Julie’s Pets at the Newton Aycliffe based Pet Shop, or at one of the market stalls at Catterick or Billingham where Julie, Gary or their staff will be able to assist you further.

Giant French Lops
The image to the right of this paragraph shows Gary, the owner of Julies Pets, holding a 'Giant French Lop' baby rabbit.

Although they can be trained as a house rabbit Giant French Lops can grow as long as 3 feet and are therefore not recommended for families with young children or small houses.

When buying a hutch it should be a minimum of 6 feet by 3 feet and preferrably 8 feet by 4 feet and the rabbit should have plenty of additional garden or house space in which to excercise.

GUINEA PIGS, HAMSTERS, GERBILS and MICE.

Julie's Pets stock guinea pigs and gerbils, and all types of housing, bedding, food, toys and feeding bowls for these small furry mammals. Visit our pet shop at Newton Aycliffe, or market stalls at Catterick and Billingham for further details- You will not be disappointed in our wide range of stock!

Guinea pigs are cheap to buy and easy to keep. They are quiet, clean and very sociable animals. It is better to keep more than one guinea pig but two males kept together will fight, and if you are thinking of keeping a male and female guinea pig together, it is best to get the male guinea pig neutered to avoid lots of babies! They live for 4-8 years, and can reach sexual maturity from 9 weeks old with males, and from as young as a month with females. The female has between one and six babies each time.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A PET.

  • Why do you and your family want to have a pet?
  • What type of pet and which breed is most suited to your home and your lifestyle?
  • Have you talked to people with a similar pet?
  • Have you read about caring for your preferred choice of pet?
  • Have you worked out how much it will cost to look after your preferred choice of pet? (home, cage, tank, bedding, food, vaccinations, vets bills, insurance are some of the costs to consider)
  • Can you afford to keep and care for this pet
  • Are you prepared to clean your pet’s home regularly?
  • Does your pet require a companion?
  • How will you prevent your pet having unwanted babies?
  • How big will your pet grow and does it matter?
  • How much noise will the pet make?
  • Will the noise effect you, your family or your neighbours?
  • How long will your pet live and does it matter?
  • Will you always want your pet? (A snake or pony may live for 25 years!)
  • Will your pet bite or become difficult to look after?
  • Does your pet require special conditions such as light and heating?
  • If you are planning to have cats, guinea pigs, rabbits etc. can you provide space in a garden for them?
  • Can you dedicate the time to care for your pet?
  • Who will look after your pet when you go on holiday or are unable to care for it e.g. sickness?

Consider the cost of owning a pet

Many people underestimate the cost of owning and caring for a pet and the pet becomes unwanted and sometimes abandoned.

However, if you consider the cost at the time of buying a pet it will help you choose the correct pet for you and make pets more wanted.

In general, the bigger the pet, the greater the costs. However, many smaller exotic pets can also be expensive to keep due to their special housing, maintenance and dietary requirements. Consider the following cost:

    • Initial cost of pet, its cage/house/home bedding etc,
    • Food bills
    • Bedding
    • Toys & Training equipment
    • Parasite Control
    • Vet bills
    • Micro chipping fees
    • Neutering fees
    • Costs for training classes
    • Boarding kennel fees if you are going away
    • Insurance cover
    • Replacing items in the home that the dog may have chewed or damaged.
